Turns out the CPU cooler was falling off. Maybe held on by one pin and had a good few mm of wobble. i5-4440 with the Intel stock unit. It’s been rattling a bit for a couple of weeks, but not been very stressed since the graphics card died and I’ve not got around to getting a replacement.

Does the fly help or hinder the thermal transfer?

I’m impressed that you managed to trap a fly during installation.

I’ve got a tube at work.

It’s not too bad dust wise, I wish I’d got a smaller case so it could sit on the desk instead of on the floor, which would probably help.

It’s never had any overheating issues. I guess it was quite good at thermal transfer until it dried out.
